‘THE FORBIDDEN DANCE’ CAPSULE COLLECTION BY
GRIND LONDON x BOUNTY x MOROSKY• Launch party and 1 night only exhibition with Bounty DJs and special live performance by Terri Walker at the Red Bull Studios, Tooley Street, 23rd July, 6pm – 10pm
Grind London, Bounty and Kevin Morosky have teamed up to design The Forbidden Dance capsule T-shirt collection, launching at the Red Bull Studios on 23 July with Bounty DJs and special live performances.
Celebrating the taboos of modern life that we’re all shaking a leg to, The Forbidden Dance hangs around five playful scenes tagged by lines like ‘Never Been To Compton But Have Seen Boyz In The Hood,’ ‘Lambada – That’s The Forbidden Dance’ and ‘Poom Poom Wrecker.’ Each shot has been captured by Morosky from the two year history of his cult monthly 90s hip-hop party, Bounty, which he runs with partners in crime including Radi Dadi, Martelo and Josey Rebelle.
“What we’ve tried to create with Bounty is not only the best dance in London, but a space for all types of people, relationships and beliefs,” says Morosky. “The crowd are exciting and dynamic, each and every one of them is going places, yet they all flick a finger to the big brother style social codes prescribed to them.”
Grind had been following Morosky’s photography since first venturing to Bounty, having immediately recognised a perfect fit between his aesthetic, the vibe inside the club, and their own Forbidden Dance concept.
“So much of what people do these days is seen as wrong through the eyes of others,” says Grind’s Youssef Metwali, “whether it’s society, the law or the media breathing down your neck. What we see in Bounty is a free space for fun and good times regardless of your story. The truth is, we’re all performing The Forbidden Dance; some of us have been at it our whole lives with no signs of fatigue.”
A point and shoot photographer who works on .35mm, Morosky’s core themes are documentary and reportage. He’s shot for the likes of Dazed Digital, Nylon, Vice, Attitude, Oh Comely, The Super Super and RWD, and has worked with a range of artists from musicians such as Jack Penate and Ghostpoet, to acclaimed sculptor Andrew Logan, playwright Polly Sternham, actresses Mischa Barton, Ashley Madekwe and Billie Piper, to celebrities like Peaches Geldoff.
Grind London was conceived in 2008 through the love and respect of street culture, fashion and design, producing collections that salute, promote, and often question society by pushing the boundaries of normality, aiming to mix the accepted with the unexpected to deliver something unique for all.
Each collection is built around a theme. Last year, they released Bread & Butter, paying homage to the UK by using classic imagery to show the impact of Britain on world fashion. Since, they’ve commissioned Horizontal Mambo, Politics As Usual, Refined Thuggery, and now The Forbidden Dance, in association with Bounty, Morosky and Red Bull.
Morosky says: “It’s great that Red Bull is supporting us with the launch party and exhibition. As ever, they’re always the first to invest in new talent, creativity and youth culture.”
All 5 designs are available to buy both at the Red Bull Studios’ launch on 23 July, and from Grind’s online store from 25 July at www.grindlondon.com, priced at £25. Reportage Bounty booklet also available to buy at £5, with 5 limited edition posters also available.www.whitekids.co.uk
